The collaborative paintings of Daryoush Asgar b. 1975, Tehran and Elisabeth Gabriel b. 1975, Vienna mingle the dynamics of the Baroque and the filmic quality of nineteenth-century historical painting, which converge with Pop Art and Abstraction in an epic sprawl of youth culture in search of the heroic. Through the use of art historical idioms, the figures are self-aware, ironic and iconic, beautiful if somewhat pathetic, seductive, sensuous, and opulent as they include us in their desires.Daryoush Asgar received his MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna Vienna, Austria. Asgar was awarded the Strabag Art Award in 2002. Elisabeth Gabriel received both her BA and MA from the University of Vienna Vienna, Austria. Since forming the collaboration Asgar/Gabriel in 2005, their work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe in group exhibitions and art fairs.Since 2008, they have had solo shows in New York, Vienna, Spain and now Los Angeles. Most recently, they have been featured in \”The Promise of Loss\” in New York, \”Don\’t Worry, Be Happy\” at the MAMA showroom in Rotterdam, Art Basel Miami Beach and Art Cologne. Asgar and Gabriel live and work in Vienna, Austria.
